Marma points are subtle and very effective control points or areas for body and mind. They are comparable to the acupuncture points of Traditional Chinese Medicine. However, many marmas (literally: "vital body area") are larger and often include the smaller acupuncture points. 108 such mysterious energy points are first described in a 3,000-year-old textbook of surgery, the Sushruta Samhita. At these vital points, concentrated information of the organism, its organs and organ systems, but also contents of consciousness and feelings come to the surface of the body. From an Ayurvedic point of view, marmas are the interfaces of mind, body and consciousness.

If the marma points are treated benevolently, a healing energy flows from them to the connected inner organs and switch points. This is what happens in Sukshma Marma Therapy, which is used in Maharishi Ayurveda.
