Interview with Dr Wolfgang Schachinger on the topic of women's health

What does women's health mean to you?

Women's health is a broad field. Due to the rhythmic change of hormones, women are exposed to completely different health challenges than men. In men, hormones change in very long cycles. Hormonal changes are much more drastic in women than in men at all ages. When a woman is in balance, these changes occur harmoniously and lead life naturally towards fulfilment.

Stress, environmental pollution, artificial hormones, social norms and occupational challenges, malnutrition, lack of sleep and exercise can severely disrupt these rhythms. This leads to a wide variety of complaints, from period pains and an unfulfilled desire to have children, disorders during pregnancy and breastfeeding to hot flushes during the menopause and osteoporosis in old age.

I see it as our most important task at soma to ensure balance at all ages through regular cleansing cures and suitable herbal and orthomolecular remedies in order to prevent disorders and diseases.

With which types of complaints do women come to you?

We have patients of all ages. The most common clinical pictures we treat at soma are: Menstrual disorders; unfulfilled desire to have children; complaints during pregnancy and breastfeeding; hot flushes, sleep disorders and osteoporosis during the menopause.

Which female hormone fascinates you the most and why?

The most impressive hormone for me is progesterone. It was previously believed that it was "only" responsible for the implantation of a fertilised egg in the uterus and the maintenance of pregnancy. However, it is much more. Progesterone, the nest hormone, is not only produced in the gonads, but also in the central nervous system. It is the most important hormone for relaxation, serenity, stamina and sleep regeneration. It is a natural anti-depressant for women (and men). If it is missing or suppressed (by the pill, hormonal IUDs and co.), joylessness and exhaustion result.

Many herbal remedies support the production of the body's own progesterone. If the body's regulatory capacity is reduced to such an extent that progesterone can no longer be produced sufficiently, it is possible to replace this substance with a "bio-identical" hormone from the yam root.

Is there an Ayurvedic women's remedy that suits ALL?

In cooperation with renowned Ayurvedic doctors, we have created a new food supplement that meets the demand to support all women health-wise. This new supplement is called "Energy Plus". It contains the medicinal plants Ashwagandha (winter cherry) and Shatavari (Indian asparagus), which are traditionally used to balance hormonal imbalances and to strengthen nerves and vital energy.

We are very pleased that the remedy "Energy Plus" is now available in our Ayurveda shop.

If you could only give women one medicinal tip, what would it be?

Time for relaxation. Hectic and stress destroy the subtle female rhythms of life. Sufficient sleep, regular (Transcendental Meditation) meditation and enough free time protect female health and cannot be replaced by any medicine.
