Pratimarsha Nasya

Nasya is one of the five classical purification therapies of Ayurvedic medicine. With this application, the headquarters of Kapha, the head and chest area, is cleansed of waste products (Ama) and old burdens. Kapha is responsible for strength, stability and immunity. If the Kapha headquarter is overlaid with waste products (Ama), this has an unfavourable effect on life energy and the immune system.

This imbalance can lead to thickened mucous membranes, mucus accumulation, obstructed nasal breathing, allergies and asthma. The ability to think clearly is also impaired. Very often there is a feeling of chronic fatigue.During a Pancha Karma cure (traditional Ayurvedic cleansing cure), Nasya therapy is used to remove an imbalance of Kapha. A variation of the major Ayurvedic purification therapy is "Pratimarsha Nasya". This "small and often repeated Nasya" is used to supply the main seat of Kapha with valuable herbal substances and to purify it in small steps again and again.

How to do it:

Put two drops of the recommended oil on your left palm. Dip the little finger of your right hand into the oil and insert the oily finger into one nostril. Moisten the inner walls of the nose with the oil by making small movements with the finger. Repeat this process for the second nostril. When all the oil from the palm of your hand has been inserted into the nostrils, hold both nostrils tightly closed with the thumb and forefinger of your right hand after you have exhaled. Then suck in air strongly through the nostrils and open the closed nostrils a little to create a strong suction. This transports small amounts of the introduced oil into the upper part of the nose and to the entrance of the sinuses. Repeat this suction process several times within 2-3 minutes. Afterwards, you can either blow out secretions formed by the accumulation of the oil or spit them out when you come above the throat. If you do this exercise in the bathroom, you can then do another nasal irrigation with salt water or suck up small amounts of water from your hand into your nose while showering to do a watery post-rinse.

When to do it:

Before a shower, before a walk or exercise, just after a meal. Up to 16 repetitions per day are allowed.

Do not perform:

Immediately before eating, so that the secretions formed do not mix with the food. Immediately before sleeping.
