The emergence of soma

soma, how it all began - Part 3 In search of the perfect plot of land

In the 1990s, Dr Schachinger received several offers from hotels in different parts of Austria to open an Ayurveda department there. It turned out that most of the offers to cooperate came from hotels that hoped that an Ayurveda department would bring them additional occupancy in the low-turnover season. However, Dr. Schachinger did not want to cooperate with a hotel that wanted to include Ayurveda as a possible additional offer for bad times, but rather a house that was exclusively dedicated to Ayurveda.

Soon it turned out that such a hotel did not exist, but that it had to be built.

It was at this time that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi began to work on and globalise the Vedic architectural doctrine of "Sthapatya Veda" as well as Ayurveda with experts a few years before.

Like the better-known "Feng Shui", Sthapatya Veda is an art of building that uses special structural elements and natural building materials to create buildings that are particularly conducive to health and well-being.

For Vedic architecture, Maharishi Sthapatya Veda, the following criteria are particularly important:

  • Alignment of the building exactly according to the cardinal directions
  • Arrangement of the rooms according to functional aspects around a quiet centre point
  • Entrances only from the east or north

The location and orientation of the land on which a Vedic building is to be constructed is also important.

For a "house of health" it is particularly important that the light of the rising sun fully hits the building in order to be able to unfold its invigorating and healing effect. It should also be free of harmful environmental influences and electromagnetic radiation. In addition, the location of bodies of water and other buildings in the vicinity also plays a role.

Sthapatya Veda

To build a house of health in Vedic architecture only for the purpose of Ayurvedic treatments was henceforth Dr. Schachinger's goal. Finding a suitable plot of land for this proved to be a difficult exercise.

After visiting possible suitable properties in many places throughout Austria, Dr. Schachinger was able to find a property in the spa town of Geinberg in Upper Austria in 1999 that met the requirements. The first contracts were drawn up. But then the applications for rezoning for the property were rejected by the Geinberg municipal council.

Dr. Schachinger was severely disappointed and wanted to give up the search. The rejection of the municipality of Geinberg was also described in press articles. Mayors of various municipalities in Upper Austria then approached Dr Schachinger. They showed him plots of land in their respective villages. For a long time there was no piece of land that was suitable for an Ayurveda centre according to the criteria of the Maharishi Sthapatya Veda.
