The emergence of soma

soma, how it all began - Part 8 From the idea to implementation

The idea of building an Ayurveda Centre on the property purchased by the Dutch SABO Foundation in 2003, in accordance with the dedication, had accompanied Dr Schachinger constantly since the purchase.

In his imagination, a medical centre was created that combined Maharishi Ayurveda, modern medicine and classical spa treatments with thermal water into a unique therapeutic concept. The goal was to enable people who entrusted themselves to this centre to develop towards better health, happiness and vitality. To support this, it was to be built with natural building materials in Vedic architecture (Maharishi Sthapatya Veda) and given a memorable name.

From his training in Vedic medicine, Dr Schachinger was familiar with the term "soma". "soma" is both a medicinal plant for perfect health and the name of the natural law that enables human development from individual to cosmic consciousness. The term "soma" most strongly expresses what this future centre should bring about and is also a memorable word.

Term soma

After some preparatory work such as feasibility studies for "soma" had been carried out by the "ARGE Gesundheitszentrum Hausruck", Dr. Schachinger made a first attempt to acquire the property in 2016. He tried to find more shareholders and financiers for the newly founded company soma GmbH. Despite an intensive search and many discussions, no viable solution could be found at that time. A time-limited option contract with the SABO Foundation, the owner of the property, could not be fulfilled.

After it became clear that the "next generation", the daughters Sabrina, Valeria and Jana Schachinger, wanted to help shape and realise the "soma" project, a new strategy was sought. The existing building, which housed the practice of Dr Schachinger, the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Centre and the product company Maharishi Ayurveda GmbH, became too small and was bursting at the seams. They were forced to look for expansion possibilities. The dedicated property in Geboltskirchen was almost ideal for this purpose.

The Schachinger family was now ready to implement the "soma" project on their own responsibility and with their own financial means. They were aware that in this way, despite a dedication of 10 buildings, only one first building could be built. As a first step, the previous practice building in Ried was sold in order to secure the financial means from the sales proceeds for the purchase of the land.

The negotiations for the purchase turned out to be unexpectedly difficult. Although both parties, buyer and seller, pursued the same goals, they could not agree on the details for a long time. Only after an intervention by the leader of the International TM and Maharishi Ayurveda Movement, Dr Tony Nader, was an agreement reached.

Parallel to the efforts to acquire the land, plans were developed for a first building on the site. In July 2010 the time had finally come: the purchase contract was signed and soma GmbH became the proud owner of the beautiful plot of land on the edge of the Hausruckwald.
