Ayurveda in politics

In November, two events were held at European level to present Ayurveda as a holistic health system to senior politicians.

Auch auf dem G20 Gipfel (30.11. – 01.12.2018) in Buenos Aires wiesen die Teilnehmer in ihrer Schlussdeklaration auf die Bedeutung traAlso at the G20 Summit (30.11. - 01.12.2018) in Buenos Aires, participants highlighted the importance of traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda in their final declaration. On 12 November 2018, the 3rd Ayurveda Day was held at the UK Parliament, and on 21 November, the 1st Ayurveda Day was held at the European Parliament. Both events aimed to highlight the enormous opportunities for the healthcare system offered by Ayurveda, with its methods of lifestyle medicine and holistic treatment of chronic conditions that are over thousands of years old. In the English Parliament, on 12 November 2018, the following motion was moved and tabled for discussion: Early Day Motion No. 1810

  • "Ayurveda is a timeless and time-tested tradition of holistic, natural approaches to health and addresses comprehensive nutritional and lifestyle strategies specific to an individual's physical and psychological condition at all stages of life."
  • "...Agrees with the Minister of Health that the 10:1 ratio between the amounts spent on treating diseases and those spent on prevention is not coherent. Therefore, there is a call for the integration of Ayurveda into the NHS (National Health System) to address this imbalance with a cost-effective solution."
  • "...Ayurveda and its value to humanity is recognised by the World Health Organisation as preventive and curative for many health disorders."
  • "... Calls upon the government to introduce an Ayurveda chair in all medical schools so that the future generation of medical students can get a grounding in this ancient science of health care."

Similar demands were made at the Ayurveda Day at the European Parliament on 21 November 2018 Members of the European Parliament in Brussels.

From 30 November to 1 December 2018, the G20 Summit took place in Buenos Aires/Argentina for the thirteenth time. The G20 heads of state also addressed the issue of health and health care costs. They came to the conclusion that comprehensive, high-quality health care worldwide is only possible by including traditional and complementary medicine such as Ayurveda.

Here is an excerpt from the final declaration from the G20 Summit:

"We reaffirm the need for stronger health systems that provide cost-effective and evidence-based interventions to achieve better access to health care and improve its quality and affordability to approach "universal health coverage" (UHC) according to their national contexts and priorities. This may include scientifically proven traditional and complementary medicine, where appropriate, to ensure the safety, quality and effectiveness of health services."
