In the 1970s, the two researchers Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird did an interesting experiment*. To test the reaction of plants to musical sounds, they played different types of music in different rooms where plants were kept under the same conditions. How would the plants react if they were played Bach, Mozart, classical Indian music or modern music?

Effect of music on plants

The result was surprisingly clear. Plants exposed to rock music grew slowly and at an angle away from the speakers. Sounds of Mozart and Bach caused the plants to grow faster and towards the speakers. Almost unbelievable was the result of playing Indian classical music, Gandharva Veda music by sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar: the plants grew rapidly towards the speakers and embraced them. The sound of this music was so beneficial to the plants that they grew much faster.

Music for peace

With the knowledge of the harmonising effect of Gandharva Veda music, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of Transcendental Meditation, started an important initiative. He engaged the most famous performers of Indian classical music for concert tours in all continents of the world. The aim was to neutralise conflicts between people and nations through the harmonising and invigorating effect of this music. He founded a series of "Concerts for World Peace" that lasted several years.

Opening up after the lockdown

For two years, no Gandharva concerts were possible outside India. With the lifting of travel restrictions, Indian musicians like Ranajit Sengupta can once again perform in other countries and spread their harmonising sounds.

We are delighted to be among the first venues to host Maharishi Gandharva music after the lockdown.
