Essential Oils - Part 1

More and more people are attracted to fragrant, natural scents, "the essential oils". This is because almost everyone associates the scent of fragrances with health, well-being, spirituality and religion.

It is wonderful how easily the oils can be integrated into everyday life and how they support us with the most diverse issues. Be it for the relief of physical ailments or as an aid to bring more peace to our psyche, our mind.

In order to gain more confidence in using essential oils, we will try to provide some clarity on this topic:

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are mixtures of biochemical compounds produced by plants within their metabolism. They are obtained from leaves, flowers, needles, resins, seeds, fruits, roots, barks, branches and twigs. They are liquid substances that are volatile and evaporate in the air.

The scents of a plant attract insects or keep them away. The essential oils protect the plant from disease, extreme cold and heat, and dehydration. This is exactly where you can see what a wonderful treasure these oils are for us humans as well. For example, we know that during the cold season, the essential oil of frankincense, myrrh or fir in particular cleanses the air of germs and clears it.

The fragrant oils are absorbed into our body by smelling, through the skin and mucous membranes and are metabolised 100 %. This is precisely why careful handling of the oils is necessary. Time and again there are people who literally bathe themselves in essential oil, and not just with a drop. When you consider what our body has to do here to transport the oil out of our body again, think carefully for the future about how many drops of pure oil you use for inhaling, bathing or applying. In any case, "Less is more!" applies here. You know, for example, that if you use too much "lavender oil fine" as a sleeping aid, you may lie awake all night. Too high a dosage of the oil will wake you up.

The trade in essential oils has become unmanageable. That is why it is important to pay attention to a few criteria when buying:

Natural essential oils are never cheap! Depending on the fragrance, a single drop of oil can contain dozens of grated lemon peels or half a laundry basket full of peppermint leaves.

Different essential oils never have the same price, which means that orange oil is always much cheaper than myrrh or rose oil.

If possible, you should buy from a supplier who offers the majority of his oils in organic quality (certified controlled organic cultivation).

Essential oils must be offered and stored in light-proof vials, usually made of amber glass.

Never buy opened oils, as these also have an expiry date.

Caution is advised if the label says nature-identical oil, synthetic oil or perfume oil. These are not purely natural products. Most of the time, you can smell the chemistry and leave it alone.

The following information about a 100 % natural essential oil should be on the label:

Name in local language e.g. Lavender fine
Name Botany Lavandula angustifolia
Country of origin France
Method of production Steam distillation
Content 100 % pure essential oils
Parts of the plant used Blossoms
Dilution -
Batch number -

A beautiful fragrance lamp blend for the pre-Christmas season is:

2 drops frankincense oil Indian

2 drops of orange oil

Frankincense oil has a very relaxing effect on the psyche and loosens tough mucus in the case of colds. Orange oil has a calming effect and provides security and light in the dark season.

We offer 100% pure essential oils in organic quality in our Maharishi Ayurveda Shop.
