Magnesium - the essential mineral

Magnesium is a mineral that is essential for the function of every single cell in the body. Physical and mental exertion, stress and stressful situations and many diseases drastically increase the consumption of magnesium in the body. In our stressful times, magnesium deficiency is much more widespread than generally assumed.

Magnesium in the blood

Magnesium levels are not measured in standard blood tests, and even when they are measured in rare special cases, the value is only questionably relevant. In the serum, which is used for the measurement, the magnesium concentration is much lower than in the body cells. In the blood, 90 % of the magnesium is found in the red blood cells, which are not used for the measurement. This is why a magnesium deficiency is hardly ever diagnosed by laboratory tests. American magnesium researcher Dr. Shealy claims: "Magnesium deficiency may be responsible for more diseases than deficiency of any other nutrient."

In practice, you can have a comprehensive blood test and check whether the body is well supplied with the most important vital substances, minerals and micronutrients.

What symptoms can magnesium deficiency cause?

The most common and well-known symptoms include muscle cramps, constipation and high blood pressure. But chronic back pain, sensitivity to light and migraines are also among them. Magnesium deficiency symptoms of the nervous system include sleep disturbances, anxiety and restlessness, often also the so-called "restless legs". In the cardiovascular system, magnesium deficiency can be manifested not only by high blood pressure but also by symptoms such as cardiac arrhythmia and narrowed coronary arteries. Supposedly hormonal complaints such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and cramps during menstruation are often caused by magnesium deficiency. General fatigue and lack of energy, irritability, physical and mental weakness are just as suspicious of magnesium deficiency as osteoporosis, which is not only about calcium but also magnesium deficiency.

Magnesium deficiency is very often aggravated by medication. Medications that can trigger a magnesium deficiency are mainly blood pressure-lowering and diuretic drugs.

Magnesium supplementation

Magnesium is present in our normal diet. Unfortunately, the mineral content of food has decreased significantly in recent years due to overfertilisation of the soil.

Magnesium should therefore be supplemented in the case of special stress (stress, regular sport, illness and medication). This can be done through various mineral waters, food supplements and external applications.

The mineral waters available in Austria with the highest magnesium content are Longlife, Magnesia and Radenska.

When it comes to food supplements, there is an incredible variety of products. Unfortunately, many commercially available magnesium preparations are not really suitable for promoting health in the long term. On the one hand, this may be due to the fact that mainly inorganic magnesium salts are used (e.g. magnesium chloride) or that other substances such as sweeteners, preservatives or colourings are present in the preparations, which are known not to be necessarily beneficial to health. When choosing a magnesium product, one should make sure that it contains mainly organic magnesium salts (such as magnesium citrate or magnesium orotate).

For many people, the intake of magnesium is severely limited by the fact that they react to oral magnesium administration with diarrhoea. Magnesium-Siebensalz Here we offer two products in our shop, each of which is particularly well tolerated by the stomach and intestines. One is Magnesium Seven Salt Capsules (please log in to see this Biogena product) , which contain 7 different magnesium combinations, making them particularly gastrointestinal friendly.

EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) supports the following health claims about magnesium:

  • Contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

  • Contributes to normal muscle function

  • Contributes to normal mental function

  • Contributes to electrolyte balance

  • Contributes to normal energy metabolism

  • Contributes to normal function of the nervous system

  • Contributes to normal protein synthesis

  • Contributes to the maintenance of normal bones

  • Contributes to the maintenance of normal teeth

  • Magnesium has a function in cell division

Stress and sporting activities often lead to over-acidification of the organism. This should be regularly balanced by using our alkaline powder. The alkaline powder also has a relatively high magnesium content and is suitable for magnesium substitution.

You also lose a lot of magnesium during many cleansing and purification cures. Remember to take in enough magnesium after your spring detox!
